Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. When she was a young girl, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford's interest in acting began in her early years. She joined in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she realized that the school was not right for her. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth application she was eventually admitted. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring for Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. However, she already had her TV debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning in the Nineties. She also worked regularly at the theater, ultimately being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her repertoire in 1996, quickly gained the attention of her peers.
